For the past three years we have been attending SXSW and each year we continue to notice the large amount of Austin residents who want nothing to do with the music festival that invades their city for four days. There has been a demand for something different, something for those who don’t want to purchase a badge, stand in long lines, or get caught up in the usual music industry bullshit. And this is what inspired us to organize the Midnight Scavenger Hunt during this year’s SXSW.

The idea of organizing a scavenger hunt may sound crazy but we have done this before in Los Angeles. The LA Scavenger Hunt was a huge success. Five hundred people participated in the LA Scavenger Hunt, which doubled as a benefit for one of LA’s largest homeless shelters, the Union Rescue Mission. Each team received a list of a hundred items they had to find, with each item being assigned a different amount of points. Half of the listed items were material goods that the homeless shelter was in need of and the other half was absolutely ridiculous.

For an idea of how some of the points were earned during the LA Scavenger Hunt, check out the pictures to the left. The first picture shows a guy getting a flat top and having his name shaved in the back of his head, he is also showing off his successful search for a garden gnome. The bottom picture is a kid making out with a senior citizen. Both pictures were worth 75 points.

Not only is this going to be an amazing adventure which you will most likely tell your grandchildren about but you will also have the opportunity to win the grand prize which is $1,000 cash and a 20- minute slot right before The Walkmen, at Saturday’s Mess With Texas party at Red Seven.

We wanted to make this event truly rewarding for its participants. We feel that sharing the stage with The Walkmen, David Cross, The Black Lips, The Apples in Stereo, Patton Oswalt, Fucked Up and more is a tremendous prize and wonderful opportunity for any band, comedian, drama troupe, preacher, circus act or anyone else who would want to get on stage in front of 1000+ people with no prerequisite necessary.

We would also like to make it clear that the winning team may do whatever they would like with the time slot. If you win you can give the time slot to your friend’s band or anyone else you would like to help out. Or you can go stage with a group of friends and eat cereal while staring at the audience. Do whatever the hell you want with it. We don’t care!

Andrew WK is the host of the Midnight Scavenger Hunt. The amount of excitement he will bring to this will be unbelievable.

One thing on the list that we can tell you about in advance is have your team come dressed as one the gangs from the film, The Warriors. For this your team will start with 50 points. A huge head start!

For all the information to participate in the Midnight Scavenger Hunt please go to the info section on the site.

This is an all ages event and is open to the public. The scavenger hunt will be taking place in downtown Austin, so having access to a car during the hunt is not necessary.

Here are some things we recommend you bring to the hunt:

  1. a backpack or hand bag to carry the items

  2. a camera.

Some of the items involve taking photographs. You can use a digital camera but you will receive 15 extra points if you use Polaroid film.

The concept for the scavenger hunt is simple…

Teams are made up of 1 to 5 people.

Each team is given the same list of fifty items.

Each item is worth a certain amount of points.

The team at the end with the most points wins the grand prize.

The Sign Up for the “Midnight Scavenger Hunt” will take place at the Lamar Pedestrian Bridge from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. The Lamar Pedestrian Bridge is located between Cesar Chavez St and Riverside Drive on Lamar Blvd in downtown

At 9:00pm sharp the list for the scavenger hunt will be passed out.

The teams will have till 11:00pm to get as many of the items on the list as they can.

Here are some examples of the things that were on the list for the LA Scavenger Hunt:

*Kiss a senior citizen and get polaroid evidence of it. +75 points

*A Tooth +15 points

*One team member getting a flat top with their name shaved into the back of their head +55 Points

*A Brazilian Flag +10 points

*Each team member getting cornrows and extended finger nails. +100 points

*An empty bottle of Absinthe +25 points

*A pair of roller skates. +10 points

You get the idea.

If you want to participate in the scavenger hunt but don’t have a team, please contact us. Our goal is to make sure that no one is left out!

We will be announcing the winners of the hunt at midnight. While everyone is waiting for the results and the announcement of the winning team there will be a few surprises you won’t want to miss. It will be amazing. We promise.

And remember, the only thing we can tell you in advance regarding points is, if your team shows up dressed like one of the gangs from the film The Warriors you will start with 50 points. This is a huge head start and every point counts!

The cost to participate in the scavenger hunt is $2 per person.

THIS EVENT CANNOT SELL OUT!
